FORMATION |
Dear Friends,
This Saturday marks the 9th anniversary of 9/11. The events of that tragic day are forever embedded in our minds. They also have broken forever the hearts of those who lost loved ones that fateful day and whose lives have been irrevocably changed.
Those who committed the heinous crimes of that day died along with the thousands of innocent people they murdered. Unfortunately, the people responsible for planning those crimes against humanity remain fugitives. As the war in Afghanistan rages on, Bin Laden has not been caught and the cells of Al Qaida still operate.
Because the wounds of 9/11 are so deep and still fresh, the current conroversy over the building of a mosque and an Islamic Center near the site of where the World Trade Towers once stood tall has been most unsettling for some of the people who have strong ties to Ground Zero. This controversy is quite complex. There are issues on both sides, pro and con.
The group of Moslems whose plan it is to build the mosque and cultural center are called “The Cordoba Initiative.” It is named after the Spanish city of Cordoba which was the center of the Muslim conquest which lasted about three centuries. Although this group has since changed the name of the proposed site near Ground Zero to Park 51, the question of funding remains unchanged.
Many believe that the major funding for the future mosque and cultural center is coming from sources outside our country. This is perfectly legal. What is questionable is if all these sources are themselves legal. Is it possible that some of this funding is linked to members of Al Qaida for example, or to some other militant and subversive group or individual?
The other major issue tangled in this controversy has to do with our Constitution. Religious freedom is an important right guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution. Moreover, it is fundamentally attached to our status as human beings. With the right of religious freedom comes the right and need to have a place to exercise one’s religious freedom. As a free society, our government has the obligation to facilitiate space where places of worship can be constructed so long as they do not jeopardize the safety of or infringe upon the rights of the people around them.
Like Jews and Catholics, devout Moslems take their religion seriously. Moslems are called to prayer five times a day. It is crucial therefore that they have a mosque near the places they work so they can observe and fulfill their religious duty. This is why the mosque is as emotional for the Moslems as it is for those who have strong ties to what happened at Ground Zero.
Just recently Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York offered to mediate this issue for both sides, as did N.Y. State Governor David Paterson. It would seem, however, that neither party is interested in compromising, at least for the time being. Archbishop Dolan has suggested that another site be made available. He cited the case of the Polish Carmelite Sisters who wished to establish a convent on the grounds of Auschwitz, the death camp.
Polish nuns intended to use the proposed convent to pray for the millions of Jews and Christians who were innocently killed at Auschwitz. Many Jews opposed the location chosen for the convent, citing the fact that the Jews who died there have made it holy ground which should not be disturbed or desecrated. Realizing the issue had become one of insensitivity to the Jewish people, Pope John Paul II intervened. Consequently, the Carmelite convent was relocated and prayers for reparation as intended continue at another site to this day.
The same underlying issue that provoked the controversy at the death camp is what prevails at Ground Zero. Trying to be sensitive to the needs of the Islamic community as well as to the needs of those who remember the events of 9/11 is not easy. This must be done with prayer and mutual respect and understanding.
But there is something more inherent to the controversy which must be addressed and that is the question of bias and discrimination. To hold an entire group or nation responsible for the sinful actions of some of its militant members is morally reprehensible.
I became acutely aware of this while watching a recent TV program on the anniversary of the dropping of the hydrogen bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To continue to hold all Japanese people responsible for the heinous crimes of some of its members is wrong. The same can and should be said about 9/11. Regardless of where the mosque is placed, there is no place for religious bias, or for that matter any type of discrimination.
I hope and pray the controversy of the Islamic mosque is resolved peacefully and amiably. Meanwhile, you and I can do our part to root out bigotry. It is simply un-American and un-Christian.
God bless you,
Fr. Don
Fr. Hugh will hold a 5-week scripture course on the “GOSPEL OF MATTHEW” on Tuesday evenings, September 21st , September 28th, October 5th, October 12th, and October 19th from 7:30pm to 9pm in the Rectory Chapel. Please read Chapters 1, 2, 3 & 4 for the first class. If you plan to attend, please call Teresa Van Buren at 581-4266, x105.
Dear Parishioners,
As you may have noticed, a group of new Altar Servers, who have been trained during the last couple of months, began their ministry at our Sunday Masses. Those who have been altar servers before were re-trained according to new rules and needs, as we would like to introduce more solemnity and orderliness to Sunday Mass. Our most recent training involved how to use processional candles and incense. We are in the process of updating our worn out altar server equipment and apparel: New Albs (white robes the altar servers wear during Mass) and two sets of processional candlesticks/torches for the Church & Auditorium. The Altar Server Albs range from $50 to $70 each and we need 30 albs. The candlesticks, however, are more expensive ranging from $500 to $1000 a pair. Please consider donating an Alb or candlestick in honor of your loved ones. A commemorative plaque will be attached to each item. Thank you for your generosity. Please see the Rectory Receptionist during office hours. Thank you, and God Bless. Fr. Janusz Mocarski

PRE-CANA:
Proper marriage preparation is a priority in the Church. As a sign that
the whole parish is involved in this preparation, more than the priests of the
parish are involved. There are four areas where interested parishioners
may minister: 1). The initial meeting with the engaged couples.
2). Helping the couples with FOCCUS. This tool is strongly recommended
by the Bishops of the US, and helps the couple look at the different areas of
marriage that are important for discussion before entering marriage. 3).
The Pre-Cana In-Home Sessions facilitated by married couples. (The first
and last meetings are held on parish grounds.) 4). Leading the
rehearsals before the marriage.
COMMUNION
TO THE HOMEBOUND: If
you or someone you know would like a parishioner to bring Holy Communion to
you or a loved one, please call the Rectory Receptionist at 581-4266, x100.

A Prayer for All Workers
(Edie Rasell)
Loving, Working God,
On this Labor Sunday we ask your special blessing on all people who labor, either for pay or as volunteers, in jobs or at school, in the workplace or at home, in the U.S. and around the world.
We especially pray for your blessings on workers who do not have jobs and for those whose inadequate pay does not allow them to live the full life you intend for each of us.
Creator God, help us to build a new world in the midst of the old.
A world where all workers are valued.
A world where those who clean houses are also able to buy houses to live in.
A world where those who grow food can also afford to eat their fill.
We pray for the coming of a world where all workers everywhere share in the abundance that you have given us.
We ask these things knowing that you give us the courage and strength to live out our faith in the workplace and the marketplace, as well as in the sanctuary.
Amen.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES ~ School will soon be open. Families struggle to provide their children with the wide variety of items that teachers request. need of additional volunteers who would be able to deliver food baskets to those
who call the Outreach Office but cannot pick up the food. This would
require a commitment of -at the most- a few days per month. If you
are motivated to help in any way, please contact Parish Social Ministry at
581-4266, x128. Thank you in advance for your consideration

RESPECT LIFE
Another school year begins. How many desks are empty due to the deaths of children when they were unborn babies? Who can comprehend the talents and gifts lost due to more than 52 million abortions since 1973? PRAY that we may realize that God’s plans not our plans should guide our decisions in life and death matters like abortion and euthanasia.

FAMILY FAITH ENRICHMENT ~ ST. MARY PARISH NEEDS YOU!
What is a catechist? The word catechist comes from a Greek word that means to echo. A catechist “echoes” the basics of our faith to the children in his/her class.
A catechist isn’t a master theologian and doesn’t need a degree. Jesus chose regular everyday people to be his apostles and disciples – people just like you and I. He sent them forth to bring his Good News to the whole world. A catechist is someone who wants to bring that Good News to the children of St. Mary.
Who is a catechist? You can be. Just call Linda Crowley at 581-3304, x122, to take the first step.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Learn how to “Be an Amazing Catechist!” Special presentation on Thursday, September 23rd at 7pm in Sacred Heart Hall. Our presenter is Lisa Mladanich, seasoned catechist, President of Catholic Writers of Long Island and a published author. All Catechists, Scripture Sharers, and anyone considering being a catechist are invited to attend. It will be the kick-off meeting for this catechetical year. Please RSVP to the Family Faith Enrichment Office at 581-3304, x121.
SAMARITAN’S PURSE OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD ~ This wonderful project takes an ordinary shoebox and turns it into a treasure chest for children in need. It’s not too early to start thinking about collecting shoeboxes and all the goodies that go inside of them. This time of the year is a great time to pick up school supplies at great prices, (something as simple as having paper and a pen allows a child to attend school in many countries). Other great items are available in the Summer Clearance Section, like flip flops, balls, small toys, beach toys, t-shirts, flashlights, sneakers, baseball caps. Perhaps you just came back from vacation and you have some small bar soaps, combs or any other toiletry items that are non-liquid, they will make great box stuffers. Whatever you can contribute will be put to good use. Items can be dropped off at the Rectory or the Family Faith Enrichment Office. If you have any questions, please call MaryAnn Giannettino at 581-3304, x120.
SELF ESTEEM IN RELATIONSHIPS sponsored by Women’s Ministry at Ascension Lutheran Church (Deer Park) ~ Women in the surrounding communities are invited to attend a peer-support group entitled, “Self Esteem in Relationships.” This FREE & CONFIDENTIAL program will begin September 9th and continues for eight weeks. Stewardship Prayer
Generous God,
I give thanks to you for the gifts you have given me ~ my life, my family, my friends ~ time, talents, and material possessions. All that I have comes from you. Help me to remember this and rejoice in your goodness.
Walk with me, my God. Help me, on my spiritual journey, so that I may constantly renew my relationship with you and all the good people in our parish and throughout Long Island.
Renew in me your Spirit. Give me the strength and courage to become a better follower of Jesus, to be a disciple. Help me hear the call to “Come, Follow Me.”
I give glory to you, my God as I make
Stewardship a way of life.
Amen.
REMEMBER OUR PARISH
Please consider continuing your lifelong stewardship by leaving a bequest to St. Mary’s. A gift to us in your will or trust affirms your everlasting commitment to the Parish’s life and works. You can instruct your attorney to use this wording:
I hereby give, devise and bequeath to St. Mary’s Church, with offices at 20 Harrison Avenue, East Islip, NY, the sum of $_____ to be used for its most urgent needs.
As an alternative, you can make a gift of what remains in your estate or living trust after all other bequests and expenses have been paid:
I hereby give, devise and bequeath to St. Mary’s Church, with offices at 20 Harrison Avenue, East Islip, NY, all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate (trust) to be used for its most urgent needs.
St. Mary’s Automated Sacrificial Giving
St. Mary’s is pleased to offer Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) as a convenient way for you to deliver your regular sacrificial gift to our parish. Here’s why you may want to consider this option:
Convenience ~ Your gift is automatically received once a month.
Consistency and Planning ~ Even when you are away, your gift provides consistent support of our parish and ministries. Your participation enhances our budget planning.
Confidentiality and Security ~ EFT utilizes the Automated Clearing House (ACH), the same network used for Direct Deposit and Electronic Bill Payment. In addition, paperless transfer prevents possibility of loss or theft.
Community ~ We will continue to send you envelopes. If you choose, mark your weekly envelope with the letters “EFT” and place it in the collection basket. This will allow you to participate in the offertory, and will assure us that your gift is not missing from the envelope. Also included in this mailing are specialty envelopes not part of this program.
If you are interested in this option, please complete and submit the form below. For further information, contact the Office of Ministry & Development at 581-4266, x125.
